Adventures
Lin Ward and Al Pace of Canoe North Adventures have developed their company over the last eighteen years into one of the top guiding operations in the far north. Their determination and drive as river guides has led them through sixty-five successful expeditions backed by loyal clients, one of the best safety records in the industry, and solid friendships built in the communities of the far north.Canoe North Adventures clients primarily come from Ontario living within a two-hour radius of our home base in the Hockley Valley near Orangeville. Our paddlers share a common culture of cottages, summer camps, Algonquin Park, a love of unspoiled wilderness and quality time spent in a canoe. Most importantly, our clients, whether novice or expert, bring an incredible spirit of adventure to our expeditions. Much to our delight, many have returned for second, third or even more trips with us over the years. Through many incredible shared adventures, we become good friends. These people trust our logistical planning and our delivery of a safe and secure paddling environment. We also know that these people come back because of our ability to offer a high level of camaraderie, great fun and a deep level of fulfilment.
The rivers we travel let us step into a pristine, untouched wilderness and experience a life-altering adventure in a safe and friendly environment. Allowing the clarity of experience and the simplicity of day-to-day existence on the river to be accessible to our clients becomes one of our most important priorities. Our rivers range from novice to intermediate to advanced … some, like the Snake, Keele and Mountain, flow out of the Mackenzie Mountains – some like the Horton and Anderson flow north through the great tundra plains to the north coast. All of these world class rivers tell a fascinating story and offer a challenging adventure and a privileged journey through an unspoiled wilderness.
Canoe North Adventures expeditions are built around a two-week schedule with ten to twelve nights spent on the river, depending on the length of the river. Many of our paddlers are stepping back into the wilderness for the first time in many years and so our trips are well-paced to allow for camping and paddling skills to be rekindled. We have the benefit of a steady push from the current of the river, often propelling us along at incredible speeds of 12 to15 kms per hour! We often cover 25 to 35 kms per day and this is not overly taxing our paddlers! We are able to build in layover days where we can enjoy off-river hikes or just relax in camp with extra time spent fishing or taking photographs. Most trips involve no portaging and we are able to travel with fresh foods and gear that make life on the campsite more enjoyable.
Our customers learn about our expeditions through our Hockley Base, over the Internet and through regional presentations, slide shows, musical DVDs and trade shows and through testimonials from our alumni paddlers. They sign up for an expedition through our base and personal contact by phone, email or in person with either Lin or Al. Many of our trips are fully booked from the late fall until the end of January for the following summer. We sometimes have to add a few paddlers through the late winter and early summer. Clients are required to place a non-refundable $500 deposit to save their space on the trip upon booking and then they pay two further installments.
